La plus ca change...

It’s nice to be back after a weekend spiritual retreat. Nothing cleanses the soul like a weekend filled with Gospel music and the company of good friends, though my back is a bit sore, as the accommodation was a tad modest. But I’ll not be a martyr about it.

Well, Garbo finally talks. Coyote’s choice of the word epiphany is apt. There are various theories about the origin of the Epiphany. The common theory states that the Epiphany is simply the lag between Christ’s birth and word getting to the Magi as recognized on January 6th. Other theories note that since the heathens celebrated the winter solstice around the date of December 25th, the fathers of the church moved the birth of Jesus from it’s original January 6th date to over-ride the heathen celebration and move more souls to conversion. Either theory embraces the notion of realization or creation of a new reality and the subsequent reaction to that reality.

Now, let us turn to our muse.

What is her new realization? What is her new reality? I have not seen any changes to her pattern of behaviour. She may very well entertain the notion of dating other men, but I wonder how this is any different than the diversions of the flesh she has done in the past, as she considers meandering her way through the Lavalife alphabet or entertaining other suitors. Has she truly decided to leave M behind and break off everything with him, including a platonic friendship? One would think that is the only way true change will happen for her. It will not succeed if next December we find her, once again, standing at the lip of Stonehenge trying to find M’s light to shine on her.

I think it would be in 5M's best interest if M moves on quickly, picking up a woman she doesn't much approve of.
I think she needs that beta-blocker.

Cougar or no, the 5M appears to be back on the prowl. But as Coyote suggests, perhaps she should look (backwards) before she leaps. To that end, we find some clarity in Sternberg's triangular theory of love. I'm not sure which if any of these scenarios apply precisely to the 5M/M (mis)match, but they might help explain what was missing.

Very interesting theory you've come across, IO.

And it seems like 5M is looking for Fatuous Love, the love that has passion and commitment without intimacy. But perhaps that is only because she had intimacy with M without the other two.

As for your hope, Conch Shell, that M will pick up a woman that 5M disapproves of so that she'll move on. I bet you one biscotte to your nine lemon squares that M doesn't pick up another woman before 5M picks up a new guy or goes back to M.

Love these rules of three -- life is full of 'em. I can imagine, as well, a pretty strong case for empty love between 5M & M.

Conch, perhaps it would improve 5M's life most if M somehow reconnected with his long-lost angular gawky person from PQ. That wouldn't block just her betas, but the whole damn alphabet. Short term pain for long-term gain.... I agree with your thrust, that her own life would best be served by some big impetus to move on. She ain't quite stuck anymore, but that big ol' sucky emotional Mudhole is still a little too much like spittin' distance away....

Yes, and she's not exactly moving on with her latest posting.

But she's being funnier than usual.

She could add:

M&Ms - turned down major chance for product placement in ET

M - turned down major chance for passion and commitment with 5M

Perhaps the ESI Scout would like to offer this as an opening comment.

Now, Scout, do you really think 5M needed the Reeses Pieces explanation? She was 13 when ET came out.

You didn't know it? Well, looks like we have a start on the questions for the board game.

Apostle -- you may be right. That THL person may be worthy of the rarified attention of blognoscenti everywhere. She doesn't seem like a very religious type, though -- sorry to dash your hopes. In fact she deserves kudos for best gratuitous use of the word 'fuck' in any children's story that I've seen in a blog in the past month. High praise indeed...!
