Happy Birthday!

In the beginning, you are full of confidence about what will happen in your life. Then things happen, and you realise that your own life is going to be like no-one else's. It doesn't follow predictable patterns. Expectations go un-met, or are over-met. And it's all good.

I wish the Muse a happy birthday, and, for the second half of her life, freedom from expectations, and the freedom to be happy with who she is and where she is -- whatever that is.

From this week's X-Press, the horosope for Cancer:

It's the season of high adventure. You have a sacred duty to free your safety zones, wander out to the wild frontiers and flirt with possibilities you've never entertained. To get you started, here a few suggested activities: Fly a hot air balloon over Tanzania's Serengeti National Park; run with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain; go on a two-week meditation retreat in Pondicherry, India; read Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain; give laughing lessons to a cat; make love on a mountaintop; speak the words you've been wanting to say for years.
To that, I may add, Explore happiness. It's all good.

"One's day of birth is a time not only for celebration, but reflection on the joys and trials of this life. Periods of transition, though filled with uncertainty, can be most fertile opportunities for growth. On behalf of Canadians and all loyal citizens of the Commonwealth, I wish to take this moment to extend sincere wishes to the 5M for an enjoyable birthday. Dream on, young muse. And fear not what the coming year may bring. As the distinguished playwright Oscar Wilde noted, `We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.'"

I'm not much of a one for philosophizing. I've no patience for questions like "if you wish someone happy birthday and they don't know it, does it make a difference?"

As for internal reflection, I'm more about making a plan or charting a course. Figuring out what you need to do to get where you want to go.

And for all I've made fun of 5M and her kittens, I'm a big believer of taking bold steps when you don't know what else to do.

As for maturity, look at me -- 92 and regularly getting in trouble with the Ethics Committee.

Happy Birthday, 5M!
