The problem occurred when she asked, "Junior or Senior?" You should have responded with a question, "Why do you ask?" Then, you could have said, "Junior, I think" -- or you could have had a longer conversation about the asshole who liked Hank Senior.
Or, you could have just kept buying her drinks as a way to extend the drink, and then invite back to your place.

The problem occured even earlier than that, ma'am.

When she asked, "What do they play?", he should've answered "fiddle and guitar". (Or possibly "sousaphone and harmonium", I dunno.)

But he would've avoided the whole wrist-slitting Hank controversy altogether.

Before I go getting one of them 2-way headset radios so that you two can help me out with all future conversations with the fairer sex, I have some questions.

Eigga: When it became clear that the Ball and Chain gig was not an option, do you not think I tried the buying more drinks option?

Coyote: Is there not a possibility that with your answer the young lady would have concluded that I am annoyingly pedantic? And if not, and she had then accompanied me to the Ball and Chain gig, wouldn't the ensuing suicide attempt have been something of a bar to further ardor?

It is explicity stated in Dating for Dummies that one should not talk about either their ex or suicide on the first date. I suggest you give her a copy, underline the relevant bits, and ask her out again in a couple of weeks.
